Awkward Feelings

Our precipice receptors sting like everyone else’s. Like getting mad at our kid for displaying traits we dislike in ourselves. When our kid acts out our worst insecurities, it’s okay to stop him! The kid must be strong, must be better, must not make the same mistakes. Must not! Montréal poet Nicole Brossard discusses “le spiral” of time: “When I made the first circle of what would become a spiral, I wanted to illustrate a hole in the patriarchal meaning.” To illustrate this hole is to render it graphic: that is, to illuminate it as both written and as vivid, animate — a space for living. Leonard Cohen returning to his Jewish roots at the end of his life, as entrenched as he was in Buddhism. It’s not an uncommon phenomenon — the return to the beginning at the end. The nursery rhymes that cycle through Alzheimer’s patients and the sweet goodnight. Spiraling through our days. The whoosh of time. The thrill when someone says they thought I was 39 not 49 and how can I be old enough to have a 26-year-old son! I might want to cycle back, but you couldn’t pay me to be 13 again. I have awkward feelings about every age I’ve ever been.
